Internet Blackouts Cloud Whereabouts of KP Chief Minister Sohail Afridi Following Emergency Imposition

[post-views]

Uncertainty Surrounds Detainments Amid Political Crackdown

Conflicting accounts have emerged regarding the location and legal status of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s now-dysfunctional Chief Minister, Sohail Afridi, following the federal government’s decision to declare a state of emergency in the province. Leadership from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) initially claimed that Afridi, who was leading a party protest march toward Islamabad, had been taken into custody alongside senior provincial officials. However, federal authorities have stopped short of officially confirming his arrest, leaving his exact whereabouts unverified.

PTI Condemns Alleged Abductions and House Arrests

According to statements from Afridi’s aide Shafi Jan and PTI MNA Shahid Khattak, the Chief Minister was taken into custody during the protest movement. Subsequent reports from insider sources suggested that Afridi and PTI KP Provincial President Junaid Akbar may have been placed under house arrest under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) ordinance.

In a series of formal statements, PTI leadership strongly condemned the actions, characterizing the reported detentions and the imposition of governor’s rule as a deliberate effort to bypass elected provincial institutions and suppress democratic dissent. Party spokesperson Sheikh Waqas Akram demanded the immediate disclosure of all legal grounds and formal charges, calling for the unconditional release of Afridi, Akbar, and KP Assembly Speaker Babar Saleem Swati.

Communications Disruption Hinders Verification

As the situation developed, PTI leaders acknowledged difficulty in establishing direct contact with their regional network due to widespread internet suspensions and security operations across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Speaking on national television, Sheikh Waqas Akram noted that severe communication barriers had made it challenging to independently verify the status of several party members.

Echoing these concerns in a video statement released on social media, PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja stated that the party could not confirm Afridi’s condition or physical location, describing both Afridi and Junaid Akbar as missing.

Federal Authorities Cite Law and Order Operations

Responding to the claims, Minister of State for Interior Tallal Chaudhry confirmed that several individuals had been detained in connection with regional law and order concerns, though he declined to confirm whether Chief Minister Afridi was among those in custody. Legal proceedings, Chaudhry stated, would apply to any individuals wanted in criminal matters, while those not named in specific cases would be released.
