As the stately Frere Hall was bathed in a stylish shade of pink, the Sindh Transport Department unveiled its new and improved “Ladies’ Lavender Line” bus service on Wednesday, offering gratis journeys for female passengers through February 7th.
The opening of this elite transportation option was presided over by female MPs and community leaders, with media women also in attendance. Minister of Transport, Sharjeel Inam Memon and Minister of Labor, Saeed Ghani, joined forces with other prominent officials, dignitaries and bureaucrats.
Starting out, this special bus route will run from Model Colony to Tower via Sharea Faisal with a fleet of eight buses in service. Each of these rosy-colored buses boasts a maximum capacity of 50 passengers, including 24 seats and two designated spots for those with special needs.
As part of the package, bus hostesses have been hired to provide top-notch service, operating from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., with buses running every 20 minutes during those hours, and hourly during off-peak times.
Memon revealed plans to appoint female drivers in the near future, and reported that instructions have been issued to the National Radio and Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC) to make sure the entire staff of the lavender line consists of women.
