The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) dropped the hammer on spinner Asif Afridi, banning him from participating in any cricket format for the next two years due to corruption allegations.
Afridi, 36, copped to his guilt, confessing to two separate infractions under the board’s Anti-Corruption Code for Participants.
“The PCB showed no mercy and dealt out a two-year ban for violating Article 2.4.10, and a six-month suspension for breaching Article 2.4.4. Both penalties will run concurrently, starting from September 12, 2022 when Afridi was first provisionally suspended,” the PCB notified in a statement.
“In determining the punishment, the PCB considered Afridi’s admission of guilt, remorse, previous track record, and his request for leniency, claiming the violations were accidental,” the statement added.
Commenting on the situation, PCB Management Committee Chairman Najam Sethi stressed the board’s “zero-tolerance approach towards such offenses”.
“Suspending a professional cricketer for two years is not something the PCB takes lightly. However, as the governing body of the game, we need to set examples, handle such matters with a firm hand and send a clear message to all cricketers,” Sethi stated.
