ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s ruling parties, including the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), and the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), have jointly called for the formation of a full court bench of the Supreme Court to address the suo motu notice regarding the delay in the general elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The petition, filed by Farooq H Naek, Kamran Murtaza, and Masoor Usman Awan, also requested the exclusion of Justice Ijazul Ahsan and Justice Sayyed Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi from the bench.

This development occurred a few days after Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial took notice of the delay in the assembly elections in Punjab and KP, which were dissolved on January 14 and 18, respectively, and formed a larger bench to hear the case.

The bench began hearing the case on Thursday afternoon, where it will determine who is eligible to issue the date for polls, the constitutional responsibilities of the federation and provinces, and who will conduct the elections and when.
