Pakistan PM’s plea for upholding the sacred 1973 constitution

Amid a constitutional and political crisis in Pakistan, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called on the judiciary to re-examine its role and become the protector of the country’s constitution.

During the launch ceremony of the 1973 Constitution mobile application, the premier criticised the court for issuing a stay order against a legislation that is still in progress. He stressed the need for state institutions to unite to uphold the constitution and ensure that national interests are protected.

Sharif emphasized that Pakistan was at a crossroads of constitutional challenges, and called on state institutions to demonstrate their commitment to the constitution. He also highlighted that the judiciary can only interpret the law and not rewrite it, based on a globally recognized concept.

Sharif paid tribute to politicians from all backgrounds who worked hard to formulate the 1973 Constitution and reached a consensus on its content. The constitution, he added, has its roots in parliament and is a sacred document that needs to be upheld.
