In the wake of a formidable 7.7 magnitude earthquake that rattled the Loyalty Islands in New Caledonia, another tremor struck on Saturday with a magnitude of 7.1, according to the US Geological Survey.
The epicenter, located approximately 300 kilometers east of the New Caledonian archipelago, was shaken by the 35-kilometer deep jolt.
Nancy Jack, manager of Friendly Beach Bungalows on Kana Island in Vanuatu, described the impact as brief, stating, “It lasted maybe two seconds, not too big,” and confirmed that no significant waves were observed.
Shortly after the 7.1 magnitude quake, a 6.5-magnitude aftershock occurred at 12:51 pm (0151 GMT).

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center provided an update, assuring that any potential tsunami waves would measure less than 0.3 meters (one foot) in height.
While cautioning the Pacific islands of Fiji, Kiribati, Vanuatu, and Wallis and Futuna, the center rescinded the warning for coasts within 300 kilometers of the epicenter.
Australia’s meteorology bureau confirmed that mainland Australia, islands, and territories faced no tsunami threat in the aftermath of the quake.
Previously, a 7.7 magnitude earthquake had struck the Pacific Ocean southeast of New Caledonia on Friday, prompting a regional tsunami warning. However, the alert was lifted three hours later.
According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake had a depth of 37 kilometers.
