In a groundbreaking move, the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) is set to lodge a petition with the Supreme Court, seeking a reevaluation of the verdict that led to the disqualification of party chief Nawaz Sharif from holding public office and the position of party president. Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, on Monday, officially confirmed this upcoming legal action.
Back in July 2017, the apex court had barred Nawaz Sharif from any future public office due to his involvement in the Panama Papers scandal. The disqualification, a result of concealing his son’s unpaid salary in the Panama case, imposed a lifelong restriction on his political career.

A year later, the court further decreed that individuals disqualified under Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution are ineligible to lead a political party. This ruling came in response to petitions challenging the validity of the Elections Act 2017.
During an interview, the interior minister expressed the PML-N’s intention to request Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial to exclude himself from the bench assigned to hear the review plea. The ruling party considers the top judge “biased” against their interests, prompting this strategic move.
