The Sindh High Court has directed the Election Commission of Pakistan to announce a new schedule for the local government elections in Karachi and Hyderabad.
Announcing the decision — which the Sindh high court reserved on November 14 — on the petitions of Jamaat-e-Islami and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf against the delay in the local body polls, the High Court also told the Sindh government to provide security for the elections.
The local body elections have been postponed many a time. Traditionally, the urban areas of Sindh, particularly Karachi and Hyderabad, are not the stronghold of the Pakistan people’s party PPP. Jamaat-e-Islami and PTI maintained better local body campaigns, and it is attributed that both parties may produce better results. However, once the most popular party of the Urban Sindh MQM suffers from internal and external conflicts. Nevertheless, only the election results shall determine the political fate of the parties.
