Field Marshal Asim Munir Arrives in Tehran as Pakistan Pushes Iran-US Mediation

[post-views]

Field Marshal Asim Munir reached Tehran on Tuesday, leading a delegation of Pakistani officials for meetings with senior Iranian leaders, according to Iran’s semi-official Mehr news agency.

The visit is the latest in a series of trips by the Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces to the Iranian capital, as Pakistan continues its effort to mediate between Iran and the United States.

Field Marshal Munir last travelled to Tehran on August 24, accompanied by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi. Those talks centred on easing regional tensions, ending the military deadlock and opening the way for a negotiated settlement.

Pakistan’s mediation earlier produced an interim peace deal, known as the Islamabad Memorandum, signed in June. The agreement, however, soon stalled after fresh fighting broke out between Iran and the US.

The latest visit follows remarks by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi a day earlier at the Global Security Forum in Doha, where he reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to bridging the gap between Washington and Tehran. He said Islamabad had “never gave up” on peace efforts, despite difficult phases during the conflict.

Naqvi praised Field Marshal Munir for playing a remarkable role in bringing the two sides closer. He also recalled the signing of the 14-point Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding on June 18, and the Lake Lucerne Summit in Switzerland that followed, which Pakistan and Qatar organised jointly.
