In a historic announcement on Friday, US President Joe Biden appointed Admiral Lisa Franchetti to take charge of the country’s Navy, making her the first woman ever to lead the US Navy and the first female to serve on the joint chiefs of staff.
“With 38 years of devoted service to our nation as a commissioned officer, including her current role as Vice Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Lisa Franchetti is the ideal candidate for the position of Chief of Naval Operations (CNO),” Biden proudly stated.
Biden also highlighted Admiral Franchetti’s exceptional expertise in both operational and policy matters throughout her illustrious career. He noted that she is only the second woman in history to achieve the rank of four-star admiral in the US Navy, and once confirmed, she will make history again as the first woman to lead the Chief of Naval Operations and serve on the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

In addition to Admiral Franchetti’s appointment, Biden revealed further advancements in naval leadership. He named Vice Admiral James Kilby, the deputy commander of US Fleet Forces Command, as the next Vice CNO. Moreover, Admiral Samuel Paparo, the current commander of the US Pacific Fleet, has been nominated to lead US forces in the Pacific as the commander of Indo-Pacific Command.
