The United States is set to establish the U.S. AI Safety Institute to assess potential threats arising from both established and emerging “frontier” artificial intelligence models, according to Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo’s announcement on Wednesday.
Addressing attendees at the AI Safety Summit in the United Kingdom, Raimondo emphasized the need for collaboration with experts in academia and industry. She stated, “I will almost certainly be calling on many of you in the audience who are in academia and industry to be part of this consortium. We can’t do it alone; the private sector must step up.”
Additionally, Raimondo pledged that the U.S. institute would formally partner with the United Kingdom Safety Institute to work jointly on these initiatives. “We have to get to work together,” she stressed.
