ISLAMABAD: The caretaker government on Tuesday set up a six-member Joint Investigation Team (JIT) to “bring out facts related to the alleged campaign on social media” against Supreme Court judges.
According to the notification issued by the Home Ministry, the committee has been constituted under Section 30 of the Electronic Crimes Act, 2016.
Headed by the Additional Director General, Cyber Crime Wing of the Federal Investigation Agency, the JIT comprises the Intelligence Bureau, Inter-Services Intelligence, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Islamabad, a representative of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, and any other participants. The elected member will join.
The notification clarified that the JIT will have to submit a preliminary report to the Ministry of Home Affairs within fifteen days with additional support from the FIA headquarters during the investigation. No specific social media posts were identified as part of the alleged campaign.

The JIT’s mandate, as stated in the notification, is to “find out the facts behind an alleged social media campaign aimed at tarnishing the reputation of the honorable judges of the Supreme Court”.
The committee is responsible for identifying and prosecuting offenders in accordance with relevant laws, filing charges in appropriate courts and recommending measures to prevent such incidents in future.
