Amjad Islam Amjad, a celebrated Pakistani Urdu poet, screenwriter, playwright, and lyricist, born on August 4, 1944, in Lahore, Punjab, British India (now Pakistan), has left an indelible mark on the literary world. With over 70 books to his name, Amjad received numerous prestigious awards, including the Pride of Performance, Sitara-e-Imtiaz, and Tamgh-e-Imtiaz, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the Urdu language, a treasure of our cultural heritage.
Amjad’s career was a testament to his versatility and talent. From his early days as a lecturer at Govt. M.A.O. College Lahore to his role as a director of television dramas like “Waris” at Pakistan Television Corporation, he proved his mettle in various creative roles. His leadership as the Director General of the Urdu Science Board and the project director of the Children Library Complex further demonstrated his diverse skill set, inspiring us all to explore and excel in different fields.
Amjad’s influence in the television industry was profound. His insightful storytelling and versatile writing style captivated audiences in TV drama series like “Dehleez,” “Samandar,” “Raat,” “Waqt,” and “Apnay Log.” His contributions extended beyond dramas, with significant works in poetry, essays, columns, and translations, showcasing his literary prowess in various forms. For instance, his poetry collection ‘Harf Harf Roshni’ and his play ‘Bulbul’ are considered masterpieces in Urdu literature.
In addition to his impact in the television industry, Amjad’s influence transcended borders, as evidenced by his collaboration with Bollywood, where he penned the lyrics of “Mann Ki Lagan,” a song that marked the debut of the acclaimed singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan in the Indian film industry.
Amjad’s legacy also includes his humanitarian work. He was a member of the Blessing for All foundation, where he actively advocated for positive societal change through the arts and literature. His efforts included organizing poetry recitals and literary events to raise awareness about social issues and promote cultural understanding.
His literary excellence garnered widespread acclaim, leading to numerous accolades, including the prestigious Necip Fazil International Culture and Art Award in Istanbul, Turkey, in December 2019. This award, named after the renowned Turkish poet Necip Fazil, is given to individuals who have made significant contributions to culture and art, making it a testament to Amjad’s global influence and recognition.
Tragically, on February 10, 2023, the world lost Amjad Islam Amjad, a prolific wordsmith and a cherished figure in the realm of literature and arts. His passing, following a cardiac arrest at the age of 78, left a void that can never be filled. Yet, his contributions to the Urdu language, literary world, and entertainment industry continue to inspire and resonate with audiences worldwide, a testament to the enduring power of his work and his spirit.
