Decline in Pakistan’s Mobile Phone Imports Continues in July 2024

In July 2024, Pakistan’s imports of mobile phones dropped to $64.504 million, marking a 5.30 percent decline from the same period in the previous fiscal year. This corresponds to an import of Rs17.957 billion, reflecting a 6.18 percent decrease from July 2023.

Additionally, data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) indicates a significant 76.84 percent month-on-month decrease in mobile phone imports, down from $278.574 million in June 2024 to $64.504 million in July 2024.

Furthermore, the overall telecom imports for July 2024 amounted to $102.587 million, representing a 13.25 percent increase from July 2023.

Notably, the fiscal year 2023-24 saw a substantial growth in mobile phone imports, reaching $1.898 billion compared to $570.071 million in fiscal year 2022-23. This increase is contrasted by the local manufacturing/assembling of 17.34 million mobile handsets from January to June 2024, with 6.19 million 2G handsets and 11.15 million smartphones. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) reports that 61 percent of mobile devices on the Pakistan network are smartphones, with the remaining 39 percent being 2G devices.
