Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif urged the international community and organizations to hold Israel accountable for the killings of journalists in Gaza. On International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, he emphasized that many journalists have been deliberately targeted to suppress the truth.
He highlighted the relentless efforts of journalists, including those from Pakistan, who work tirelessly to keep people informed, often at great personal risk. “Sadly, journalists face numerous dangers and challenges while pursuing the truth,” he lamented.
The Prime Minister condemned Israel’s interference with UNRWA operations in Palestine, noting that journalists not only strive for peace but also risk their lives in war zones. They are subject to violence, threats, abductions, and even murder. “Without protecting journalists, we cannot achieve true freedom of the press,” he stated, affirming the government’s commitment to enhance their safety and rights.
He acknowledged the sacrifices made by Pakistani journalists for democracy and the rule of law, pointing out the Journalist and Media Workers Protection Act 2021, designed to safeguard them. Additionally, he mentioned a health insurance initiative for journalists launched by the federal government.
PM Shehbaz assured that the government is dedicated to preventing violence against journalists, holding offenders accountable, and upholding their rights, which are protected under the Constitution of Pakistan.
