Richard Grenell, the incoming special envoy for missions under President-elect Donald Trump, publicly urged the release of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, who is currently in detention facing corruption charges in Pakistan. In an interview with Newsmax, Grenell reflected on the improved US-Pakistan relationship during Khan’s tenure, highlighting Khan’s status as an outsider and former cricket captain, which resonated with Trump’s own image.
Grenell noted that Khan’s situation mirrors that of Trump, as both leaders face similar allegations that he believes were politically motivated. “We had a much better relationship with Pakistan during the Trump administration when Imran Khan was in charge,” Grenell remarked, pointing out their mutual understanding and the common-sense approach Khan brought to leadership.

Earlier, responding to a statement from US State Department spokesperson Mathew Miller about the sentencing of Pakistani civilians in military tribunals, Grenell criticized the US response as delayed and insufficient, urging for immediate action: “You are late. And this is too little and too weak. Speak normally. Free Imran Khan.”
