The government has proposed forming a parliamentary committee to continue discussions with PTI, instead of the judicial commission the party has demanded to investigate the protests on May 9, 2023, and November 26, 2024, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced on Thursday.

Tensions between the government and PTI have been high for over a year, but both sides began negotiations in late December to ease political unrest. However, progress stalled due to disagreements over key issues, including the formation of judicial commissions and the release of PTI members.
Last week, PTI decided to boycott the fourth round of talks scheduled for January 28, following directions from party founder Imran Khan to withdraw from negotiations over delays in forming the commissions.

During a cabinet meeting, PM Shehbaz reaffirmed the government’s willingness to set up a parliamentary committee. He also suggested completing the work of a previously established committee from 2018 and forming another to investigate the February 2024 elections to ensure transparency.
