Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and former foreign minister, expressed his belief that Pakistan can serve as a link between China and the United States, according to a report by Deutsche Welle (DW) on Monday.
Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, Bilawal discussed Pakistan’s relationships with China and the US, its expectations from former President Donald Trump, efforts to improve ties with India, and regional security challenges.

He highlighted the global impact of the growing competition between China and the US, stating that Pakistan has historically acted as a mediator rather than choosing sides. “If you want to place us in a camp, we see ourselves as bridge builders. We played that role in the past by facilitating diplomatic ties between the US and China,” he said. He emphasized that Pakistan aims to continue this role rather than deepen divisions.
Regarding the US under Trump, Bilawal described him as a “deal maker” and suggested that Pakistan could find common ground with the US on regional challenges. One key area, he noted, was increasing engagement with India.
He pointed out that the US efforts to position India as a counterweight to China influence the region’s power balance. Using the arms race between India and Pakistan as an example, he stated that both nations could prioritize issues like poverty and unemployment. However, if the US strengthens India’s role as a regional security power, Pakistan would take necessary steps to maintain the balance.

Bilawal also acknowledged China’s steady and reliable relationship with Pakistan, saying, “It makes sense for us to do business with China, but that does not mean we should be cut off from the rest of the world.”
Last year, Pakistan made it clear that it would not compromise its relationship with China for the sake of better ties with the US. The Foreign Office had reaffirmed that Pakistan does not believe in “zero-sum relationships” and considers both China and the US as important partners.
