Election Commission of Pakistan Rejects PTI’s Applications Regarding Intra-Party Polls

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has turned down the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) fresh applications challenging the ECP’s authority to investigate its internal elections. PTI had submitted four applications questioning the ECP’s jurisdiction, including a request for the return of records taken during a raid at the party’s secretariat, and sought to adjourn the case of the intra-party election until the Supreme Court issues a detailed judgment in the case of the reserved seat. However, the ECP rejected all four pleas, maintaining that it has the authority to regulate internal party polls.

The ECP order highlighted the requirement for political parties registered with the ECP to periodically elect their office-bearers in accordance with the party’s constitution and questioned the verification process for intra-party elections. The ECP emphasized that it has the power and responsibility to ensure that a political party’s intra-party elections comply with the law and the party’s constitution. Additionally, the ECP dismissed the PTI’s request for the return of seized files and the plea to postpone the intra-party election proceedings.
