Germany ramps up military spending

Germany is set to purchase 18 Leopard 2 tanks and 12 self-propelled howitzers to replace the stocks depleted by Ukraine’s deliveries, as per the procurement documents viewed by Reuters on Friday.

According to the finance ministry documents that are meant for parliament, the tanks would cost 525 million euros ($578 million) and the howitzers would cost 190.7 million euros. All these tanks and howitzers are expected to be delivered by 2026.

A defence source said that the purchase of tanks includes an option for another 105 tanks at a price of approximately 2.9 billion euros. The German parliament’s budget committee is expected to approve the deal at the end of May.

Following last year’s Russian invasion, Germany has supplied 18 Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine. The country aims to bridge the gap with new tanks as soon as possible.
