A deal has been reached between Hamas and Israel to halt the hostilities in Gaza for four days, with the possibility of extending the period, according to Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which mediated the agreement. The deal also involves a prisoner swap, in which Hamas will free 50 people who are held by the group, while Israel will release 150 Palestinian women and children who are detained illegally by the state. The deal is expected to provide some relief and hope for the people of Gaza, who have been suffering from the relentless Israeli attacks since the 7th of last month.
However, the deal has not stopped the Israeli aggression, which continued to target Gaza and the West Bank with airstrikes and shelling overnight, killing at least 20 Palestinians and wounding many more. The death toll has risen to over 14,100 since the start of the Israeli offensive, which has also caused widespread destruction and displacement in the besieged enclave. The international community has condemned the Israeli violations of human rights and international law, and called for an immediate and lasting ceasefire. The deal between Hamas and Israel is seen as a step towards ending the bloodshed and restoring peace and dignity for the Palestinians.
