ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday expressed optimism that a long-awaited peace agreement between Iran and the United States could be finalized within the next 24 hours, describing the two sides as being closer to a breakthrough than ever before.
In a statement, the prime minister said preparations were underway for the electronic signing of the agreement, which would be followed by technical-level discussions. He thanked both Washington and Tehran for continuing negotiations and also acknowledged the support of regional partners involved in the peace process.
A day earlier, PM Shehbaz had announced that both sides had agreed on a final draft of the deal. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also voiced confidence, referring to the proposed accord as the “Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.”
The diplomatic push follows months of tensions and military exchanges between the United States and Iran. Pakistan has played a key mediating role since the conflict began earlier this year.
Meanwhile, Qatar praised Pakistan’s efforts, with its prime minister commending both PM Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir for helping advance the negotiations.
