Israeli Strikes Kill 20 in Lebanon as Fragile Ceasefire Comes Under Pressure

[post-views]

BEIRUT: At least 20 people were killed in Israeli airstrikes across Lebanon on Saturday, according to Lebanon’s state news agency, a day after a ceasefire with Hezbollah took effect to end months of escalating conflict.

Israel said the attacks were launched in response to more than 50 projectiles allegedly fired overnight by Hezbollah toward Israeli forces in southern Lebanon. Lebanese media reported strikes on several locations in southern Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley.

Hezbollah accused Israel of carrying out hundreds of ceasefire violations and warned that continued attacks would not go unanswered. The group also urged the United States to pressure Israel to halt its military operations.

Israeli officials said their forces were acting defensively within a designated security zone and remained committed to the ceasefire. However, they reported that five Israeli soldiers had been killed by Hezbollah attacks over the past two days.

The renewed violence has raised concerns over the durability of the truce and a broader U.S.-Iran understanding aimed at reducing regional hostilities.
