ROME: Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced on Tuesday that her government has decided to suspend the automatic renewal of a defence agreement with Israel, citing the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.
Speaking on the sidelines of a wine industry fair in Verona, Meloni said the decision was taken in view of the current regional situation. However, she did not provide specific details about the nature or terms of the agreement.
The move reflects growing caution among European governments as tensions continue to rise across the Middle East. Italy’s decision signals a possible shift in its defence and foreign policy approach, particularly in response to the evolving security landscape.
Officials have not yet clarified whether the suspension is temporary or could lead to a broader reassessment of bilateral defence cooperation between the two countries.
