The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has announced a decisive operation aimed at restoring peace in the sectarian-strife-ridden Kurram District. The decision comes after increasing tensions and violence from miscreants undermining a recent peace agreement.
A high-level meeting, attended by the Chief Secretary, Inspector General of Police (IGP), and other top administrative and police officials, was held to strategize the operation. According to a government spokesman, the operation will target violent elements while ensuring the safety of the district’s peaceful residents.
The spokesman stated that the government is fully committed to implementing the peace agreement as per both law and Pashtun traditions, ensuring that the state’s support remains with the peaceful citizens. However, the government emphasized that action against violent elements in the affected areas had become unavoidable.

Security forces will back up local police and civil administration during the operation, while efforts will be made to separate peaceful residents from miscreants before any action takes place. The government has already made arrangements for alternative accommodations for residents displaced by the operation.
To facilitate the identification of miscreants, the provincial government has requested both parties involved in the dispute to cooperate with law enforcement agencies. Despite ongoing peace efforts over the past three months, which included a grand jirga (a traditional council), some miscreants attempted to sabotage the agreement.
The spokesman detailed violent incidents, including a murder attempt on the Deputy Commissioner, who was critically injured, as well as attacks on security forces and relief convoys. The government has appealed to the public for full cooperation with security forces to root out the miscreants and restore peace to the district.
The government reiterated its commitment to upholding the peace agreement and ensuring that the peaceful residents of Kurram District can live in security and harmony.
