Former prime minister and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday expressed concern over the state of infrastructure in Gilgit-Baltistan, saying he was saddened by the region’s lack of development and poor public facilities.
Addressing a public rally ahead of the June 7 Gilgit-Baltistan elections, Nawaz said the condition of roads and basic services was disappointing. Referring to his journey from Gilgit Airport to the city, he remarked that the deteriorated roads reflected years of neglect and raised questions about the use of public development funds.
Nawaz assured residents that efforts would be made to complete development projects regardless of the election outcome. He said Gilgit-Baltistan held a special place in his heart and recalled the infrastructure initiatives launched during previous PML-N governments, including roads, hospitals, power projects, and hydropower schemes.
The PML-N supremo also noted that travel time between Gilgit and Skardu had been significantly reduced during his tenure, improving connectivity and public convenience. He regretted that several planned projects, including the extension of a major highway to Khunjerab, were not completed.
Nawaz further pledged to discuss the expansion of Gilgit Airport with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and advocate for the operation of larger commercial aircraft to improve regional access and economic opportunities.
