Pakistan Targets B+ Sovereign Rating by Next Fiscal Year, Says Finance Minister Aurangzeb

[post-views]

Ambitions for Sovereign Rating Upgrades and Global Capital Market Access

Pakistan is actively pursuing additional sovereign credit rating upgrades while preparing to expand its footprint in international debt markets as macroeconomic stability takes firm hold, Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Muhammad Aurangzeb revealed in an interview with Bloomberg TV. The Finance Minister stated that Islamabad is explicitly targeting a B+ sovereign credit rating by the next fiscal year, leveraging three consecutive rating upgrades secured over the past year across major global rating agencies.

Refinancing Strategy and Foreign Reserve Mobilization

Outlining the country’s debt management strategy, Aurangzeb emphasized that the government aims to keep overall external liabilities—currently hovering around $100 billion—broadly stable. Instead of expanding net borrowing, the fiscal strategy focuses on refinancing existing maturities, extending debt duration, and diversifying capital sources through international bond markets. The planned return to international capital markets builds on Pakistan’s growing foreign exchange reserves and improved investor confidence following sustained structural reforms under the macroeconomic stabilization agenda.
