Pakistan Walks Diplomatic Tightrope Amid US-Iran Tensions

[post-views]

As tensions between the United States and Iran continue to unsettle the region, Pakistan has emerged as an active diplomatic intermediary, attempting to facilitate dialogue while carefully balancing its ties with Washington, Tehran, Beijing and key Gulf allies.

Islamabad recently hosted high-level contacts between American and Iranian officials as part of wider efforts aimed at easing regional instability. Pakistani officials view peace in the Gulf as directly linked to the country’s economic security, trade routes and internal stability, particularly along its sensitive border with Iran.

However, Pakistan’s growing role has also placed it under increasing international scrutiny. A recent US media report alleged that Iranian aircraft had been stationed at Pakistani airbases during the conflict, prompting criticism from some American lawmakers. Islamabad strongly rejected the claims, describing them as misleading and insisting that all related activity was connected to diplomatic and logistical arrangements supporting peace efforts.

At the same time, China has encouraged Pakistan to intensify its mediation role, reflecting Beijing’s interest in regional stability and secure energy routes.

Analysts say Pakistan’s influence remains limited, as deep mistrust between Washington and Tehran continues to hinder direct progress. Diplomats believe Islamabad’s primary role is likely to remain focused on maintaining communication channels and encouraging de-escalation rather than securing a major political breakthrough.
