ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to supporting peace and stability in the region, saying Islamabad would continue its diplomatic efforts until a lasting peace is achieved and would “never let Iran down.”
Speaking during delegation-level talks with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in Islamabad, the prime minister welcomed the Iranian leader and his delegation, describing the visit as a source of great satisfaction following the recent memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the United States and Iran.
Sharif conveyed his regards to Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Ali Khamenei, and praised his leadership during recent regional tensions. He also expressed condolences for the civilian lives lost during the hostilities and commended Iran’s leadership and people for their resilience.
The prime minister thanked Tehran for its confidence in Pakistan’s role as an honest mediator, saying the two countries share a bond based on “true brotherhood.” He stressed that Pakistan would continue working to facilitate dialogue and support efforts aimed at securing a durable and dignified peace.
Sharif also highlighted the contribution of Chief of Defence Forces and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, crediting him with playing an important role in efforts that helped prevent further escalation. He similarly acknowledged the diplomatic work of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
The premier also thanked Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Egypt for their support during the diplomatic process.
Looking ahead, Sharif said Pakistan and Iran would strengthen cooperation in trade, investment, economic development and reconstruction. He described the two neighbours as “brothers and friends forever,” pledging to work together for peace, stability and prosperity across the Middle East, Gulf region and South Asia.
