PML-N Defends ECP and Upcoming Elections: Debunking Criticisms and Highlighting Transparency

Amidst growing concerns about the upcoming Pakistani general elections, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Deputy Secretary General, Attaullah Tarar, stepped forward to defend the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and dispel accusations of bias.

Addressing reporters, Tarar acknowledged his party’s reservations regarding certain delimitations but emphasized that these concerns do not translate to a lack of trust in the ECP’s fairness and impartiality. He strongly condemned attempts to cast doubt on the electoral body’s integrity and urged against politicizing the election process.

Senior PML-N leader Malik Ahmed Khan joined Tarar in voicing support for the ECP. He lauded the organization’s commitment to conducting free and fair elections, upholding the constitutional mandate entrusted to it. Khan further commended the Supreme Court for thwarting alleged attempts to delay the polls, portraying it as a victory against a “conspiracy” hatched by the PTI.

Khan emphatically reminded everyone that the power to choose their future lies with the people of Pakistan. He reaffirmed the importance of holding the elections on schedule, allowing citizens to exercise their democratic right freely.

Sharing his personal experience, Khan acknowledged raising concerns with the ECP regarding his constituency’s increased population. However, he stressed that addressing specific issues should not equate to undermining the entire electoral process.

Regarding the “level-playing field” narrative, Khan criticized attacks on state institutions on May 9 and reiterated that participating in fair elections is a fundamental right, not a privilege.

Tarar and Khan’s statements come against the backdrop of growing anxieties expressed by legal bodies like the Supreme Court Bar Association and the Pakistan Bar Council. These organizations have raised concerns about transparency, integrity, and fairness in the upcoming elections, particularly under the current Chief Election Commissioner.

PML-N’s defense of the ECP and the upcoming elections signifies a crucial voice in the ongoing debate about transparency and fairness in the Pakistani electoral process. As concerns remain, open dialogue, addressing specific issues transparently, and upholding the democratic rights of all citizens will be essential for fostering trust and ensuring a peaceful and credible election.
