PTI’s Junaid Akbar Khan Elected Chairman of National Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee

Junaid Akbar Khan, a Member of National Assembly (MNA) from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), was elected as the Chairman of the National Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on Friday, according to an official statement from the NA Secretariat.

The PAC is one of the most influential committees in the parliament, holding the power to summon individuals and records from government departments concerning financial matters. The chairman’s position had remained vacant since the February 2024 General Elections.

Initially, PTI had nominated Sher Afzal Marwat for the role, but later replaced him with party spokesperson Sheikh Waqas Akram. On December 20, Speaker of the National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq had given both the government and opposition one week to submit nominations for the PAC chairmanship.

Today’s press release confirmed that Junaid Akbar Khan was elected “unanimously” to the position. His nomination was supported by figures like Dr. Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, Opposition Leader Omar Ayub Khan, Senator Shibli Faraz, and other members, including Riaz Fatiana, Malik Aamir Dogar, Wazhiya Qamar, and Sardar Muhammad Yousaf Zaman.

In his remarks, Akbar thanked the committee members for their trust, expressing his intent to work collaboratively with them moving forward.

During the meeting, Dr. Tariq Fazal Chaudhry noted that the decision to grant the PAC chairmanship to the opposition was made by the government, which had submitted a list of five candidates, including Junaid Akbar.

Chief Whip Amir Dogar attributed the delay in appointing a chairman to the government, noting that in previous instances, the opposition was not asked to submit any nominations. He stated that the government’s new approach had created a tradition of requesting a panel for PAC nominations.

In response, Dr. Chaudhry clarified that the PAC chairmanship was traditionally given to the leader of the opposition, which at the time was Shehbaz Sharif.
