Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) on Saturday decided to move the Supreme Court to challenge Lahore High Court (LHC) orders suspending Punjab governor Baligh ur Rehman’s notification seeking removal of Punjab Chief Minister Pervez Elahi from the top provincial slot.

Sources privy to the matter said the PML-N leaders at a party session, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and attended by senior party leadership, while discussing the provincial politics feared that if CM Elahi were given full authority regarding the vote of confidence, he could influence elections. The PM was told that CM Elahi did not have the required majority in the assembly that would dethrone PTI-PMLQ in the province, the sources added. The sources further said the party’s legal team had drafted plea against the LHC’s orders. The LHC had suspended governor’s notification barring Mr Elahi from holding the CM office. Mr Elahi was reinstated as the chief minster as a result of the court’s orders. However, the court bound the CM to not opt for assembly dissolution until he obtained a vote of confidence from Punjab assembly as the PTI-PMLQ alliance had been repeating the notion of dissolving Punjab assembly.
