Russian President Vladimir Putin has dismissed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s proposal for face-to-face talks aimed at ending the war, saying he sees “no point” in such a meeting at this stage.
Zelensky had issued an open letter urging direct negotiations and an immediate ceasefire, arguing that efforts to end the conflict should not depend on renewed international attention. Putin, however, criticized the letter’s tone and maintained that meaningful peace talks must come before any ceasefire agreement.
Speaking at Russia’s annual economic forum in St. Petersburg, Putin said negotiations between experts should take place first to develop long-term solutions. He reiterated that Russia would continue military operations until its strategic objectives are achieved.
In response, Zelensky accused Moscow of choosing war over peace and said many around the world would be disappointed by Putin’s refusal. The exchange comes as fighting continues, with Ukraine reporting attacks on Russian-linked vessels and Russia launching strikes that Ukrainian officials say killed at least 13 people and injured dozens more.
