BAGHDAD: The New York Times has claimed that Israel established two covert military outposts in Iraq’s western desert ahead of the recent US-Israel tensions involving Iran. According to the report, Iraqi officials discovered the alleged sites, while a regional official said preparations for one of the bases had been underway since late 2024.
The report stated that one of the outposts was set up shortly before the conflict began and was used by Israeli special forces as a logistical and operational hub for air missions. It reportedly also included facilities for search-and-rescue operations involving downed pilots.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Israeli forces launched attacks in March against Iraqi units that came close to uncovering the alleged site. Satellite imagery reportedly identified the suspected location near Iraq’s border with Saudi Arabia.
Iraqi authorities have denied giving permission for any foreign military presence in the area. Reports also suggest Baghdad privately protested to Washington in March over the alleged covert activities, calling them a violation of Iraqi sovereignty.
Iran has also expressed concern over the reports, accusing Israel of attempting to destabilise the region further.
