Rescued Survivors Offer Hope as Venezuela Earthquake Death Toll Exceeds 1,400

[post-views]

CARACAS: Rescue teams continued their desperate search for survivors in Venezuela on Sunday after twin powerful earthquakes devastated the country, killing more than 1,400 people and leaving tens of thousands still unaccounted for. Authorities said 33 people, including several children, had been rescued over the weekend as international teams joined local efforts.

The 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes struck on Wednesday, causing widespread destruction in the coastal state of La Guaira. More than 1,600 foreign rescue workers have arrived to assist, while hundreds of aftershocks have hampered operations and heightened fears among residents.

Although the government has reported only hundreds of people missing, an opposition-backed online registry lists nearly 50,000 individuals as unaccounted for. Rescue experts warn that the critical 72-hour window for finding survivors has largely passed, reducing the chances of locating people alive beneath the rubble.

International rescue teams have saved several children, including an infant rescued by U.S. crews and two 11-year-old boys pulled from collapsed buildings by Colombian and Mexican teams. The government says over 3,000 people have been injured and thousands displaced, while international aid continues to arrive as relief operations shift toward recovery.
