The Sudan army and paramilitary group, Rapid Support Forces (RSF), clashed for the second day, resulting in a death toll of at least 56 people, with nearly 600 others injured, according to a private news agency report on Sunday.
An eyewitness in Sudan’s capital Khartoum informed CNN that loud noises and explosions could be heard throughout the night, and the fighting intensified after Sunday morning prayers. Additionally, several battles have been reported hundreds of miles away in the eastern city of Port Sudan.
The Central Committee of Sudan Doctors confirmed that 56 people were killed, and nearly 600 injured, in the clashes that erupted after the tensions escalated between the two rival entities. Each accused the other of attacking first.
According to AFP witnesses, there were loud explosions and intense gunfire in the northern and southern suburbs of the densely-populated capital Khartoum, with tanks rumbling on the streets, and fighter jets roaring overhead.
Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, the paramilitary chief of Sudan, stated that the group had seized most of Khartoum’s official sites after the clashes began on Saturday.
