The changes to the accountability laws, made by the then-Pakistan Democratic Movement-led government in 2022, included reducing the term of the NAB chairman and prosecutor general, restricting NAB’s jurisdiction, and transferring pending cases to relevant authorities. The top court had previously nullified these modifications and ordered the reopening of cases against public office holders that were closed following the amendments. This includes cases involving prominent figures such as Nawaz Sharif, Asif Ali Zardari, and Yousuf Raza Gilani.
