Trump Says US Would Defend India, Praises Modi as “Tough Negotiator”

[post-views]

EVIAN: US President Donald Trump told reporters on Wednesday, on the sidelines of the G7 meeting in France, that he had held a “very good” conversation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, adding that the two countries are actively working toward trade deals.

Trump described Modi as a “tough negotiator” and said he intends to visit India “sometime in the future.” New Delhi has been pushing for months to secure a Trump visit, with reports suggesting it could potentially take shape as part of a broader meeting involving Japan and Australia.

Asked about the defense relationship between Washington and New Delhi, Trump went further than simple diplomatic courtesy, stating plainly that the United States would come to India’s aid if the country were ever attacked. “If they were attacked, we would be there to help them,” he said.

Trump then tied that commitment directly to Modi himself. “If anybody attacks that man, we’re going to be there,” he said, referring to the Indian prime minister. He did, however, add a notable caveat regarding any future change in India’s leadership: “Now, if there’s a new leader, I’m not sure about it.”
