Trump Warns Iran on Hezbollah as Switzerland Talks Open
WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump cautioned Iran on Sunday that military action could follow if Tehran fails to rein in Hezbollah, as senior US and Iranian officials began peace talks in Switzerland. The negotiations opened against a backdrop of fresh tension in Lebanon, where clashes between Israeli forces and Hezbollah have threatened a preliminary Washington-Tehran accord.
Posting on Truth Social, Trump demanded Iran immediately halt Hezbollah’s escalation, warning that any US military response could exceed the intensity of recent operations. His statement followed Saturday’s Israeli airstrikes, which reportedly killed at least 30 people across eastern and southern Lebanon before fighting eased once Israeli forces were ordered to stand down.
Wednesday’s US-Iran memorandum calls for a regional ceasefire, including Lebanon, making the latest violence an early test of that understanding. Opening the Switzerland talks, Vice President JD Vance voiced optimism, citing significant progress toward sustaining the Lebanon ceasefire and crediting Washington’s leading role in curbing the conflict.
