“Karachi Braces for Heatwave: PMD Warns of Temperatures Surpassing 40°C from April 20-23”

[post-views]

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a heatwave alert for Karachi, forecasting a sharp rise in daytime temperatures from April 20 to April 23. During this period, temperatures are expected to soar 4 to 6°C above normal, potentially exceeding 40°C.

Humidity will remain high—around 50% during the day, dropping to 25% in the evening—which could make the heat feel even more intense and uncomfortable for residents.

Authorities have urged residents, especially children, the elderly, and women, to take precautions. Health experts recommend staying indoors during peak sunlight hours, drinking plenty of fluids, and avoiding strenuous outdoor activities to reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses.

Elsewhere in the province, central and upper Sindh may see some relief in the form of gusty winds, which could provide short-term cooling.

In contrast, other parts of the country are expected to see rain, thunderstorms, and even hailstorms. The PMD forecasts rain-windstorms in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, upper Punjab, the Pothohar region, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan, with heavy rainfall and hail at isolated locations over the next 12 hours.

As of this morning, recorded temperatures in major cities include:

  • Islamabad: 21°C
  • Lahore: 27°C
  • Karachi: 28°C
  • Peshawar: 23°C
  • Quetta: 23°C
  • Gilgit: 17°C
  • Muzaffarabad: 17°C
  • Murree: 13°C

Residents of Karachi are advised to stay updated with weather alerts and take all necessary precautions during the upcoming heatwave.
