In a key diplomatic exchange, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif spoke with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday evening to discuss regional security, counterterrorism efforts, and ways to deepen cooperation between Pakistan and the United States.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, PM Shehbaz extended his good wishes to President Donald Trump and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to working closely with the U.S. across areas of shared interest.
The call comes amid heightened tensions in South Asia following a recent incident in Pahalgam, India. Prime Minister Shehbaz firmly rejected India’s accusations linking Pakistan to the event, describing them as baseless. He called for an impartial international investigation and urged the U.S. to play a role in easing regional tensions and discouraging inflammatory statements from India.
He strongly condemned terrorism in all its forms and reminded the U.S. of Pakistan’s heavy toll in the global war on terror — more than 90,000 lives lost and economic damages surpassing $152 billion. Shehbaz also voiced concern over the activities of terrorist groups like ISKP, TTP, and BLA, which he said are operating from Afghan territory and undermining Pakistan’s security efforts.
Further criticizing India’s recent posture, the prime minister warned against New Delhi’s alleged plans to “weaponise water” by violating the Indus Waters Treaty, saying such moves put the lives of 240 million Pakistanis at risk.
On the longstanding Kashmir issue, Shehbaz reiterated Pakistan’s stance that a peaceful resolution is critical to achieving lasting peace in South Asia.
Shifting focus to bilateral cooperation, the prime minister highlighted the enduring U.S.-Pakistan partnership and expressed interest in expanding collaboration, particularly in counterterrorism and economic development. He pointed to the minerals sector as a key area for future growth.
Shehbaz also briefed Secretary Rubio on recent economic reforms implemented by his administration, which he said are steering Pakistan towards recovery.
In response, Secretary Rubio appreciated the candid exchange and stressed the importance of ongoing dialogue to support peace, stability, and mutual prosperity in the region.
