Trump Renames Pentagon as Department of War

[post-views]

US President Donald Trump is set to sign an executive order renaming the Department of Defense with its historic title, the “Department of War.” The order, expected Friday, authorises Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth to also be called “Secretary of War.” While the change cannot be made permanent without congressional approval, the directive allows the Pentagon to use the new title as a secondary name and to recommend legislation for a full rebrand.

The War Department was first created in 1789 under George Washington and remained in place until its rebranding after World War II. According to the executive order, the old name “conveys a stronger message of readiness and resolve” compared to the current label, which Trump argues emphasises only defensive posture. He has long floated the idea, citing America’s “unbelievable history of victory” under the former name.

The White House has not confirmed the cost of a permanent rebrand, though US media estimate it could run into billions, covering agency emblems, uniforms, and digital systems. The move, Trump’s 200th executive order, coincides with China showcasing new military hardware, heightening global focus on US military strategy.
