Chinese President Xi Jinping warned US President Donald Trump that mishandling the Taiwan issue could push China and the United States toward direct confrontation, highlighting the deep tensions that still surround relations between the two powers.
During their meeting, Xi described Taiwan as a core national interest for China and urged Washington to act carefully to avoid further instability in the region. He said any provocative move on the issue could seriously damage bilateral ties and regional peace.
Despite the warning, the tone between the two leaders later softened during a state dinner, where both emphasized the importance of cooperation and stable relations. Trump acknowledged the need to maintain communication with Beijing even as disagreements remain over security and trade matters.
The two leaders also discussed economic cooperation and broader global challenges, signaling an effort to prevent tensions from escalating further. While differences over Taiwan remain unresolved, the meeting reflected a shared interest in keeping diplomatic channels open and avoiding a deeper conflict between the world’s two largest economies.
