Foreign Office reaffirms solidarity with Saudi Arabia and calls for immediate end to attacks threatening holy sites and regional security
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Friday strongly condemned an alleged Houthi attack on the Taibah electricity distribution station in Madina, describing the September 29 incident as a “grave provocation” and a threat to regional peace and security.
In a statement, the Foreign Office said the attack targeted civilian infrastructure responsible for supplying electricity to the Prophet’s (PBUH) Mosque.
“The sanctity of the Two Holy Mosques and the safety of worshippers and pilgrims must be respected under all circumstances,” the Foreign Office said.
Islamabad called for an immediate and unconditional halt to what it described as reckless actions, warning that such incidents posed serious risks to regional stability.
Pakistan Reaffirms Support for Saudi Arabia
The Foreign Office reiterated Pakistan’s “unwavering solidarity” with Saudi Arabia and expressed full support for the kingdom’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and security.
It said Pakistan stood firmly alongside Saudi Arabia in its efforts to protect the Two Holy Mosques, safeguard its population and ensure the security of pilgrims.
The Foreign Office added that Pakistan had continued, and would continue, its efforts towards achieving lasting peace and stability in the region.
Saudi-Led Coalition Blames Houthis, Group Denies Involvement
The statement followed accusations by the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen that the Houthis were responsible for striking the electricity distribution facility in Madina. The Houthis have denied the allegation.
Coalition spokesman Major General Turki al-Maliki said a drone struck the Taibah electricity distribution station at 5:11am on September 29.
According to Maliki, an investigation by Saudi authorities, including an examination of the drone wreckage, concluded that the Houthi group had planned and carried out the attack.
The coalition said one transformer was taken out of operation, although the incident did not disrupt the wider electricity network.
Incident Comes Amid Escalating Yemen Conflict
The alleged attack occurred amid intensifying fighting in Yemen, where government forces have reported conducting operations against Houthi targets.
Saudi Arabia had also said earlier in September that it intercepted and destroyed a Houthi drone south of Makkah before the aircraft entered restricted airspace over the city.
The Saudi-led coalition described that episode as the second Houthi attempt to target Makkah since 2017. The Houthis denied targeting Makkah or any other Islamic holy site.
The competing accounts remain disputed, with Saudi authorities attributing the incidents to the Houthis while the group rejects responsibility.
