IESCO Introduces QR Code Payments to Make Electricity Bill Collection Faster and More Convenient

[post-views]

The new digital facility allows consumers to pay electricity bills and demand notices through mobile banking applications and digital wallets, eliminating the need to visit payment centres.

RAWALPINDI: The Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO) has introduced a QR code-based payment system, enabling consumers to pay their electricity bills and various types of demand notices by scanning the codes printed on the relevant documents. The initiative is aimed at making electricity payments more accessible, efficient and transparent through digital financial services.

According to an IESCO spokesperson, the facility has been launched in line with the federal government’s broader policy of promoting digitisation, transparency and improved public service delivery across the power sector. The Ministry of Energy’s Power Division is pursuing the adoption of modern, customer-oriented services to improve the experience of electricity consumers.

The initiative has been introduced on the directions of the energy minister and forms part of the government’s efforts to modernise electricity-related services and facilitate consumers through digital technology.

IESCO Chief Executive Officer Engineer Chaudhry Khalid Mahmood said the new facility would make payments faster, easier and more convenient while improving transparency and accuracy in the collection process.

Under the system, consumers can pay their bills without visiting a bank or designated payment centre. They simply need to open their mobile banking application or digital wallet, scan the QR code printed on their original electricity bill or demand notice, verify the amount payable and complete the transaction.

The facility is available around the clock, seven days a week, allowing consumers to make payments at any time according to their convenience. This flexibility is particularly useful for people who face difficulties visiting payment centres during working hours or travelling to designated locations to clear their dues.

However, IESCO has advised consumers to exercise caution while using the new facility. They should scan only the QR codes printed on their original electricity bills and demand notices and carefully verify the payment details before completing a transaction.

The introduction of QR code payments represents another step towards digitising electricity distribution services in Pakistan. By reducing dependence on physical payment channels, such initiatives can improve convenience, streamline revenue collection and make routine interactions between public utilities and consumers more efficient.

Nevertheless, the effectiveness of digital payment systems will depend on their reliability, accessibility and public awareness. Consumers must be able to use the facility easily, while clear safeguards should protect them against fraudulent payment requests and incorrect transactions.

The new system offers IESCO consumers a more convenient way to discharge their payment obligations. Its broader significance lies in demonstrating how practical digital solutions can improve the delivery of everyday public services.
