As the holiday season unfolds across Europe, it’s hard to escape the never-ending articles praising the exquisite French cuisine and criticizing the daredevil antics of Italian drivers on the roads, including the highways.
I vividly remember my visit to Rome 25 years ago for work, which offered me a brief glimpse into the world of Italian drivers. From what I observed, they seemed to be a lively and spirited bunch, but I can’t recall any particularly risky maneuvers. They had a fondness for speed, but it never felt unsafe.
However, as we embarked on our planned holiday this year, I delved into the topic of driving in Italy, and let me tell you, not a single piece of information I stumbled upon brought me any comfort about our upcoming journey spanning several hundred kilometers over a two-week period. We bid farewell to our cozy home in Spain just a week ago, nestled in a quaint coastal town between Valencia and Alicante.
On the first day of our adventure, we hit the road, heading northward along the mesmerizing coastline, covering around 600 kilometers. Our destination for the night was my brother-in-law’s picturesque farmhouse nestled amidst the tranquil hills of Catalonia. From there, we had a breathtaking view of the seaside resort town of Roses, a mere 15 minutes away from the Spanish-French border.
The following morning, we resumed our expedition with cautious optimism, determined to navigate the renowned Italian roads unscathed. The first few kilometers were relatively smooth sailing, as we marveled at the stunning landscapes passing by our windows. However, as we neared the bustling city of Milan, things took an unexpected turn.

The following day, we embarked on our journey along the dazzling French Riviera, eventually arriving in the vibrant city of Nice, where we booked a rather pricey hotel. To our disappointment, the hotel staff proved to be less than helpful, bordering on rudeness. Exhausted from the long drive, we opted for a quick meal, grabbing some wraps from a local deli. However, they turned out to be a poor value for money, leaving our taste buds underwhelmed by their lackluster flavor.
As we hit the road the next morning, we embarked on the final stretch of our adventure. The temptation to make a pit stop in glamorous Monaco was strong, but as we approached the exit, the sight of luxurious cars heading there made us reconsider. Fearful of experiencing an inferiority complex in my modest two-year-old VW Golf compact, we decided to continue our journey without entering the principality.
In no time, we found ourselves cruising past Genoa on the stunning Italian Riviera, and to our surprise, the infamous Italian drivers were nowhere to be seen. In stark contrast to our experiences with French drivers, who tailgated even on deserted overtaking lanes and maneuvered at the last minute, the Italian drivers on the winding mountain highways maintained a safe and comfortable distance. If they intended to overtake, they smoothly transitioned into the appropriate lane well in advance, displaying a level of skill and consideration that left us impressed.
The scenic route continued, with each twist and turn revealing breathtaking vistas and hidden gems. We marveled at the numerous tunnels along the way, an intricate network that added an element of adventure to our journey. The Italian drivers seamlessly navigated these tunnels, always mindful of safety and the well-being of fellow travelers.
It was a refreshing change from the chaos and unpredictability we had encountered earlier. The Italian drivers exuded a sense of calm and confidence, defying the stereotypes that often surround their reputation. Their ability to maintain a steady pace and courteous demeanor on the road was a testament to their exceptional driving skills.
As we made our way through the picturesque countryside, we couldn’t help but appreciate the distinct character of each region. Italy’s diverse landscapes, from the sun-drenched coastlines to the majestic mountains, served as a captivating backdrop for our journey. The road trip became more than just a means of transportation; it became an immersive experience, allowing us to immerse ourselves in the beauty and charm of the Italian countryside.
In the end, our road trip through Italy left an indelible mark on our memories. It shattered preconceived notions and showcased the true essence of Italian driving. Beyond the stereotypes and generalizations, we discovered a nation of skilled and considerate drivers who embrace the joy of the open road. The Italian driving experience is a delicate balance of precision, confidence, and a deep appreciation for the art of navigation.
As we concluded our adventure and bid farewell to the enchanting roads of Italy, we carried with us a newfound admiration for the Italian drivers and their distinctive approach to motoring. The journey was not without its challenges, but it was the combination of breathtaking scenery, delectable cuisine, and the warm hospitality of the people that made it truly unforgettable.
In a world where road trips often feel mundane and monotonous, the Italian driving experience stands out as a vibrant tapestry of passion and finesse. So, as you plan your own adventure on the roads of Italy, embrace the quirks and surprises that await, and let the spirit of the Italian drivers guide you on an unforgettable journey filled with laughter, awe, and the joy of discovery.
