A shallow quake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale jolted eastern China on Sunday, resulting in injuries to a minimum of 10 individuals and leading to the collapse of multiple structures, as indicated by the US Geological Survey (USGS).
The seismic activity, which occurred at 2:33 am local time (1833 GMT Saturday), had its epicenter situated 26 kilometers (16 miles) south of Dezhou city in Shandong province, with a depth of 10 kilometers. Videos circulated on social media by local residents showcased swaying light fixtures, quivering ground, and people swiftly evacuating their premises.
The quake’s impact reverberated in cities as distant as Beijing, Tianjin, and Shanghai, underscoring its considerable range.
Reports sourced from Shandong authorities and conveyed by state broadcaster CCTV affirmed that a minimum of 10 people suffered injuries and 74 residences or structures crumbled due to the seismic event. The initial tremor was succeeded by 52 aftershocks, intensifying concerns among the populace.
Online platforms overflowed with firsthand descriptions of the quake’s potency. One individual shared, “The tremor packed such a punch… during the quake, my head danced on the pillow, it felt like a nightmare.” Another expressed their unease, commenting, “Words fail me, all I can say is that it’s truly frightening.”
Worth noting, while earthquakes are not an anomaly in China, they rarely impact the eastern expanse of the nation, which is densely inhabited and houses major urban centers.
