Imran Khan Gives Dr. Arif Alvi an Important Responsibility in Jail Meeting

Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has made a significant move in his latest meeting with former president Dr. Arif Alvi. This crucial meeting took place inside the Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, where Imran Khan is currently incarcerated. The news of this important development was confirmed by the PTI’s Secretary General Omar Ayub Khan in a press conference. According to him, Dr. Arif Alvi has been actively working to bridge the gap between the establishment and the former ruling party, a task of immense importance.

The decision to assign an ‘important responsibility’ to Dr. Arif Alvi came a day after Imran Khan’s refusal to apologize for the May 9 events. This refusal also marked a clear distancing of his party from the violent protests that erupted following his arrest last year. The nature of the ‘important responsibility’ assigned to Dr. Arif Alvi has not been disclosed by the PTI leader.

During the press conference, Dr Arif Alvi said that the PTI founder is ready to render more sacrifices for the country. He also said that some people of the PTI might be involved in the May 9 violence but the entire party was crashed. The May 9 violence was triggered almost across the country after the deposed Prime Minister Khan’s arrest in the £190 million settlement case last year.

Dr. Arif Alvi further said that their mandate was stolen in the February 8 general elections, adding that they had evidence about it. The former ruling party believed that their mandate was stolen as PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan last week said: “We won the 180 seats in the [February 8] elections. Our seats were given to other parties through Form 47.”

Dr. Arif Alvi stressed the need for dialogues to steer the country out of political crisis. Alvi said, “[The establishment] will have to talk to the people [PTI] having 70% mandate.” Dr. Arif Alvi has been trying to bridge the gap between the establishment and the PTI for a long time. In his maiden press conference after leaving the Aiwan-e-Sadr in March, Alvi said: “I tried to resolve things from every angle… Even now, I’m trying to resolve things.”
