The Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) Punjab achieved a significant milestone on Thursday as it captured Amin ul Haq, a senior figure within the Al-Qaeda network. Described as a close aide of Osama bin Laden, the mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks in the United States, ul Haq was apprehended on charges of plotting sabotage against critical installations in the province.

In a meticulously planned intelligence-based operation, the CTD successfully detained Amin ul Haq in Sarai Alamgir town located in the Gujrat district of Punjab. The department revealed that ul Haq had been associated with Osama bin Laden since 1996 and had been actively involved in numerous terrorist activities. Notably, his name appeared on the United Nations’ list of global terrorists, underscoring the magnitude of his threat.

The arrest of Amin ul Haq signifies a major breakthrough in the relentless fight against terrorism in Pakistan and worldwide. The CTD disclosed that ul Haq was actively devising plans for a large-scale terrorism project within the country. Undeterred in its mission to ensure the safety of Punjab, the CTD affirmed its unwavering commitment to apprehending terrorists and individuals aiming to destabilize the state.

Following the demise of Osama bin Laden in 2011 during a US raid in Abbottabad, terrorism continues to pose a formidable challenge in Pakistan, with a surge in violent activities witnessed in regions such as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. The banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) terminated its ceasefire with the government in November 2022, triggering escalated terror incidents.

The United Nations Security Council Committee’s 33rd report brought to light the significant support received by TTP from Al Qaeda and other militant factions, aggravating the security situation in Pakistan. The Centre for Research and Security Studies’ annual security report revealed a distressing six-year high of violence-related fatalities and injuries in 2023, primarily concentrated in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.

Responding to this mounting threat, the federal government recently approved Operation Azm-i-Istehkam, signifying a renewed commitment to combat extremism and terrorism. This demonstrates the collective determination to uproot these threats from Pakistan, underscoring a resolute stance against violence and instability.
