Representatives from Pakistan, China, Russia, and Iran met in New York on September 27 for a significant diplomatic gathering. During the meeting, the four countries issued a joint statement expressing serious concerns about terrorist groups operating from Afghanistan and posing a threat to regional and global security.
The statement highlighted the presence of various terrorist groups, including the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Majid Brigade, and Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), in Afghanistan. The ministers condemned recent terrorist attacks in the region and called for enhanced counter-terrorism cooperation at both bilateral and multilateral levels.
Additionally, the joint statement emphasized the importance of supporting Afghanistan in addressing the root causes of terrorism and eradicating terrorist groups. The ministers also stressed the need for Afghanistan to fulfill its international obligations in combating terrorism and preventing the use of its territory against neighboring countries.
Furthermore, the ministers reaffirmed their support for Afghanistan’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity, emphasizing the importance of non-interference in its internal affairs and the right of the Afghan people to determine their country’s future independently.
The statement also addressed the issue of narcotics, urging comprehensive measures to combat drug trafficking and support the return of Afghan refugees to their homeland. The ministers called for international assistance in promoting agricultural development and alternative crops to combat drug abuse in the region.
Moreover, the joint statement emphasized the importance of inclusive governance in Afghanistan, economic engagement, and regional connectivity to uplift the country’s economy. It also stressed the rights and needs of all ethnic and religious groups, particularly highlighting the importance of women’s access to education and economic opportunities.
The ministers advocated for Afghanistan’s economic recovery and development, calling for the lifting of unilateral sanctions and the return of Afghanistan’s overseas assets. They also encouraged Afghanistan to maintain a cooperative foreign policy and coexist peacefully with its neighboring countries.
